There were a few long reads that I’ll be re-reading over the weekend, including:
- New blood (at Fortune, by Roger Parloff @rparloff)
This article profiles the blood diagnostics company, Theranos, and the founder, Elizabeth Holmes. While you will find the founder description interesting, I found myself drawn to the questions of business model, trade secrets and regulation.
- Entrepreneurship and Job Creation in the U.S. Life Sciences Sector (at Brookings Institution, by Robert Litan (@BobLitan) and Ian Hathaway)
From the media release: “The life sciences industry—generally thought to be a major contributor to America’s innovation engine— has in fact suffered a steep decline in entrepreneurship and job creation”
In addition to a closer look at their report, I’ll be interested to see how the sector has fared overall when the BIO/Battelle State Initiatives Report is released on June 24 as part of the BIO International Convention. You can check out the 2012 BIO/Battelle report here.
- Lifting the Veil on Private Biotech Valuations (at BiotechVK, by Vikram Khanna)
This post is a VERY data rich look at private biotech valuation.
- Goldilocks & The Pace Of Biotech Startup Creation (at LifeSciVC, by Bruce Booth @lifescivc)
In this post, Bruce provides some historical data about the pace of biotech company creation.
